ACTING HEAD of Area Three fire department Uron Burke said a shortage of fire personnel is the source of major concerns.
He said of the four fire stations in St Catherine, Portmore has the greatest problem with personnel.
"In Portmore, where there is a ladder unit, a foam tender and the regular pumper, there is the need for 50 personnel to be added to the 34 currently there," Burke said.
He said the shortage of personnel is affecting other stations in the parish. He said Spanish Town has a 55-member crew although the desired staffing is 64. Linstead has a 26-man crew but requires 36 members, and Old Harbour has 25 firefighters, 11 fewer than the desired number.
"The shortage have personnel overworked, it can only be remedied by the training of additional personnel," Supt Burke said.
He also said "there is the need for more stations, especially in places like Guys Hill."
"It is very far, therefore it take a very long time to reach there, so, you could experience major damage before you reach, " the senior firefighter said.
