With a tight study regime that saw him giving up some of his fun activities, including watching almost no television and rarely going out, Javier Jones' sacrifices have paid off as he has obtained eight distinctions in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.
The student of Wolmer's Boys' School got high grades in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, English A, English B, geography and information technology.
"I have been through a lot of studies. I pushed myself as hard as possible so that I could get the best results, so I was aiming for this outcome," he said.
The 16-year-old said practising questions from past papers frequently and spending long hours at the books are the things he did to be successful.
While admitting that giving up on his favourite activities wasn't easy for him, he said he had to dedicate himself to the task in order to gain the type of rewards he wanted.
He said though it was a difficult task at first, eventually it became a habit.
Javier intends to go on to sixth form and aims to be equally successful throughout his studies, leading up to his career choice of medicine.
The usual top achiever academically said he is motivated by his intention to do well in life.
"I worked hard in my studies because I naturally want to achieve well for myself so that I can help others achieve greatness as well, but the support I got from my mother and my sister also helped out a lot," he explained.
Although sticking to a tight timetable, Javier found time for extra curricular activities which included shotokan karate and playing music.
