New buses for gov't workers

Public-sector workers who rely on the special bus service provided by the Government should soon have more options after four buses were added to the fleet yesterday.

The four 53-seater Volvo buses bring the Government Employee Transportation Project's fleet to 13.

The project, which started in 1996, transports more than 9,000 state workers daily on 12 routes in Kingston, St Thomas, and St Catherine at subsidised fares.

Dennis Townsend, chief technical director in the Public Service Establishment Division, said demand for the service was increasing.

Minister with responsibility for the Public Service, Senator Arthur Williams, speaking at the handover ceremony, said there was a clear need to "beef up" the fleet of buses in the project.
