Leader of the main opposition St Lucia Labour Party, Dr. Kenny Anthony, is urging the business community to support his political organisation in the general election scheduled for later this year.

Addressing the inaugural 'Chamber Election Forum', Anthony, a former prime minister, said that St Lucia and other Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States need to implement policies that would help them deal effectively with the present global economic crisis.

He said that the subregion has been under severe strain over the last three years, acknowledging that the governments have not had much room to manoeuvre.

Threat of social unrest

Anthony told the local business leaders that it was against this background he is warning that if the situation is not handled carefully there could be the possibility of social unrest within the islands.

"It has to be a team effort," he said, adding, "a team effort between the political directorate, the business sector and the citizens of this country.

"And in our case, this applies irrespective of which of the political parties the people of St Lucia decide to trust the future of this country in the weeks and months ahead.
