AS THE battle continues over the building at 35 West Parade in the heart of downtown Kingston, the Office of the Contractor General (OCG) last week announced that it has expanded its probe into the sale of the premises by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC).

With the UDC selling the building to Bashco Trading Company for $31 million, the OCG launched its initial probe into the transaction.

This came after M. Mahfood & Sons - which has occupied the premises for some 30 years - claimed its offers to purchase or to take a long-term lease of the property had been consistently rejected by the UDC.

Road-widening claim

According to the company, the UDC has repeatedly claimed that the property was required for road widening before it sold the building to Bashco.

Last week, the OCG said it received correspondence from attorneys acting on behalf of another tenant of the building, Fifth Avenue Traders, which claimed it had also made repeated unsuccessful efforts to purchase the building or to secure a long-term lease.
