Wong pleads guilty

The former CEO of the National Works Agency (NWA) pleaded guilty yesterday to two counts of breaching the Contractor General's Act and was fined a total of $10,000 or 30 days.

Wong had failed to comply with a lawful request from the contractor general to furnish information in relation to the award of contracts by the NWA to contractors in St Catherine. It was reported that the information was supplied, but the declaration was not signed in accordance with the act.

Ticket amnesty

Leader of government business in the Upper House, Senator Dwight Nelson, yesterday offered Jamaicans with outstanding traffic tickets an amnesty to make payments, as the Government seeks to collect more than $2 billion and spare themselves jail time.

Parliament's upper chamber approved the bill to amend the Road Traffic Act, to make way for a three-month period in which the Government would not impose penalties on persons with outstanding traffic fines.

Nelson told The Gleaner the period during which payment must be made could not yet be determined, as the legislation must first be passed by the House of Representatives.
