Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller in her swearing-in speech announced that the country would be making significant strides towards cutting ties with the British Monarchy.

The Sunday Gleaner posed this question to the public:

"Do you think Jamaica should do away with the Queen and have its own president as head of state, and why?"

We are under so much stress now financially, so getting rid of the Queen now, I don't see where this would help we. We need help financially.
