Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller in her swearing-in speech announced that the country would be making significant strides towards cutting ties with the British Monarchy.
The Sunday Gleaner posed this question to the public:
"Do you think Jamaica should do away with the Queen and have its own president as head of state, and why?"
Vivienne
We are under so much stress now financially, so getting rid of the Queen now, I don't see where this would help we. We need help financially.
Mario
I don't think the country should cut ties with the Queen. We wouldn't be better off. We need all the help we can get.
Omar
Yes, I think we should have a president as our head of state. It would look better for the country. I think the country would look more modernised.
S. Jones
I think we should get rid of the Queen because what we are doing now is just paying the governor general a whole lot of money just to be a figure head. It is costing the country too much money.
Sheldon Mills
Yeah, them need to get rid of the Queen. We would see more money in the country. I don't see why we should have a queen. Mek the Queen run England and Jamaicans run Jamaica.
Danny Francis
The Queen hold we down for too long. We need a president.
Ronald Davis
No sah! When them cut off them thing deh the country nah go get nuh help. We can't manage on our own. We need the help.
Suzette
I have been on my own from I was 16. If I can manage on my own, the country can manage on its own without a queen. We would do all right with just a president. We have the talent, so I believe we can pull through.
