We are happy to note that day-night Test cricket, of which this newspaper has long been a proponent, may now be seriously reaching the agenda of the International Cricket Council. At least the idea is being pressed by the Marylebone Cricket Club World Cricket Committee, an influential group of credible international cricket voices that debate issues and make recommendations for changes in the interest of the game.
We have argued that in our changed economic circumstance, and given our small populations, Test matches, played mostly over working days, were difficult to sustain in the Caribbean. Day-night Tests would allow after-work attendance at matches, with limited loss of productive time.
We support the view of the committee's John Stephenson that day-night matches would be "reinvigorating" for Test match attendance in the West Indies.
