Western Bureau:

The Godfrey Stewart High School in Savanna-La-Mar, Westmoreland, was rewarded with a new refrigerator by the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) Co-operative Credit Union for being the school that saved the most money in the Christmas Club for 2012.

Clifton Davy, who manages the Savanna-la-Mar and Montego Bay branches of the JTA Credit Union, told Western Focus that every year, the teachers in the parishes are encouraged to do special saving for Christmas.

"Teachers don't get Christmas bonuses, so we encourage them to save, for which they get interest," said Davy. "This money matures the first week in December and comes in handy for Christmas shopping for the teachers."

Top savers

According to Dawnette Lyons-Gordon, the JTA's contact at Godfrey Stewart High School, the school did extremely well as they were not only the top savers in the Western region but were second overall in the island.

"We were told that we would get a television or an air-conditioning unit but then we were informed that it would be a refrigerator," said Lyons-Gordon. "We think it is the best of the three because now the teachers can utilise it since it will be placed in the staffroom."

For the year 2012, Lyons-Gordon is sending out a challenge to the teachers at her school to save in earnest so they could again be the top school.
