Recognise other religions here

THE EDITOR, Sir:

As Jamaica marks 50 years of Independence in 2012, may I recommend that we honour three groups that have contributed to the development of the nation: the Hindus, Muslims, and Jews.

Perhaps, recognising Jamaica's religious plurality, we should include three religious holidays; that of Divali, which is the Hindu Festival of Lights; Eid-ul-Fitr to mark the end of Ramadan, which is one of the most important Islamic holidays; and Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, with its central themes of atonement and repentance.

The inclusion of these would contribute to ending religious bigotry and enhance the fulfilment of our national motto - 'Out of Many, One People'.
