A complaint from a number of our visitors is that there is not enough live entertainment, so while we should have more large festivals, we could also include some small- to medium-size events.
A show such as Rebel Salute has such great potential if it goes over three days, as reggae music combined with the Rastafarian influence could provide such great entertainment for local and overseas music lovers alike.
It does not appear as if we know about our culture and the international influence that it has. For example, Japan puts on more reggae shows than we do on an annual basis.
We should have more shows to appeal not only to our locals but also to the international community. We tend to promote the sun, sea, and sand, but not our culture.
There is a whole lot more that can be done. If we take a look at the appeal of an international act like Celine Dion at the Jazz and Blues festival, it shows that if we bring such quality acts regularly, others will understand that we are more than just sun, sea, and sand. We have so much talent locally that a show every month is not impossible.
There are a lot of opportunities on the table that need to be explored, not only in the form of big festivals, but also smaller events with foreign and local acts. Only Negril in Westmoreland is making an attempt to make this work.
Ocho Rios and Montego Bay need to work harder to find smaller grounds to have more frequent live shows. Falmouth would benefit from live shows being held in the town square to lure visitors from the pier into the town.
The answer is absolutely no! I think we should take Celine Dion as an example of what it takes to succeed. Our music should be used to our benefit, but we need to be wise about it.
