Coal unclean, not viable for Jamaica

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I note Winston Hay, in his article 'Can Jamaica reduce electricity costs?', in The Sunday Gleaner of January 29, speaks to more efficient use of energy. That is key.

Encouragement of renewables is also important. However, going backwards to use of coal-powered electricity generation must be resisted. There needs to be new investment to facilitate use of natural gas, and more focus on distributed electricity generation, i.e., more power (from renewable sources) generated at the household and organisational level, therefore lessening dependence on grid-supplied electricity.

See this article from The Economist on why Jamaica needs to look forward on energy policy and not backwards to coal: http://www.economist.com/node/21543563.
