Brissett cop Malcolm/Samuels Trophy

Brissett crowned themselves champions of the 2011-12 Hanover Sports Development Council Stephen 'Shorty' Malcolm/Denton Samuels seven-a-side football champions, when they defeated Lucea Old Road 6-5 on penalties, Sunday at Central playing field in Hanover.

By virtue of their win, the Brissett team, which was initially held to a 1-1 regulation and extra-time scoreline before snatching victory 6-5 on penalties, took home the championship trophy and a winner's purse of $50,000. Individual team members received gold medals.

"It was another good season as all 20 participating teams gave the fans a lot to cheer about," said Karesha Rhoden, one of the competition's coordinators. "However, Brissett deserves special commendation for winning the title."

The winning Brissett FC team read Warren Lee, Jason Mosely, Marvin Kerr, Omar Davis, Marvin Bowen, Rohan Sommerville, and Cyan Watson.

Respective roles

In the presentation and awards ceremony which followed the final, a number of teams and individual players were rewarded for their respective roles in making the season the success.

Outside of the awards to the champions, the other major awards were as follow: beaten finalists Lucea Old Road - $20,000 and silver medals; Most Valuable Player (MVP) - Dwayne Smith of Lucea Old Road, who received a trophy and $5,000; top goalscorer - Dwayne Smith, of Lucea Old Road, who received a trophy and $5,000; best defender - Karim McDermott of Haughton Gardens; best midfielder - Dwayne Hutchinson of Lucea Old Road; and best goalkeeper - Dwayne Dias of Esher FC.

In addition to the main awards, an outstanding player was identified from each team. The outstanding players were as follows: Dwayne Hill - Barbury Hill, Carvel Dixon - Brissett, Denaud Getten - Chambers Pen, Marlon Sommerville - Church Street, Roman Foster - Cross Road, Demoy Douglas - Drews Hill, Horace McFarlane - Elgin Town Rangers, Dwayne Dias Esher, George Finnikin - Haughton Gardens, Carlton Barrett - Hotel Fiesta, Rolin Nicholson - Headquarters, David Gillard - Jericho, Odaine Graham - Johnson Town, Romain Grant - Kew, Dwayne Smith - Lucea Old Road, Conrod Facey - Malcolm Heights, Roger Garwood - Mt Peace, Ricardo Powell - Paradise FC, Ricardo Sewell - Prosper, and Dale Turner - Rock River.

The tournament is staged annually in memory of former national player, Stephen 'Shorty' Malcolm, who became a household name in Hanover while he distinguished himself as a daCosta Cup player for Rusea's before advancing to the Reggae Boyz ranks.
