THE sore issue of electricity theft from Caymanas Park, carried out by residents of squatter settlements bordering the horse-racing facility, has again come to a head.

Following a similar drive last year January, Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) recently launched another operation, led by McKay Security Limited boss, Jason McKay, to disconnect all illegal light apparatus connected to the company's lines.

After threats were made against CTL's staff last year, McKay said he was again making it his responsibility to sever all illegal disconnections from CTL, which continues to be hit by hefty bills.

Cash-strapped CTL has been cutting back on expenses, even scrapping its None Such Awards in favour of a laid-back presentation at the racetrack later this month instead of its usual glitzy award ceremony at a Corporate Area hotel.

McKay, who is also a district constable with the St Catherine South police, said the connections range from crude to sophisticated, including underground wiring for up to a quarter mile.

He said any reconnection, or attempted reconnection, will certainly involve the attention of the police, including prosecution for illegally abstracting electricity.

"I am carrying out my commitments between McKay Security and CTL," McKay said. "We will be making a formal report to the police if we see any reconnection."
