THE EDITOR, Sir:
I read with extreme consternation the suggestion by Senior Super-intendent of Police (SSP) Radcliffe Lewis that the Government should permanently seize 'robot' taxis.
Let me remind SSP Lewis that, with all his good intentions, this suggestion is extremely barbaric and should be withdrawn. What about those corrupt businessmen who continue to evade customs and pay little or no customs duty? Should the Government permanently seize their property?
While I would never advocate for anyone to break the law, SSP Lewis needs to understand that we are living in a time of harsh economic realities, and these things will happen.
Crippling the poor
Why not suggest that the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) implement better cost-saving ventures? But I understand SSP Lewis' position. Robot taxis are operated by poor individuals, so we should seize their assets. SSP Lewis, could you find alternative means of work for these people once you seize their means of livelihood?
Robot taxis are a problem, but do we need to be draconian in alleviating the problem so that Jamaica's big white elephant, JUTC, can become profitable? I guess the laws are only created for the poor.
