  • Jamaica loses fearless journalist - Falconer

Minister with Responsibility for Information Sandrea Falconer has expressed sadness on the passing of Wilmot 'Motty' Perkins.

In a statement issued yesterday, she said Perkins' passing had robbed Jamaica of an outspoken and fearless journalist and talk-show host who would never back down from his convictions about any issue.

Falconer said: "Our nation needs journalists who keep debates about issues in our society alive, and radio talk-show host Motty Perkins was supreme. His programme welcomed all guests, but his discussions were rightfully tuned to challenge the actions and statements of persons who hold elected office.

"Despite his incisive thoughts about leaders, he was still a simple man who could laugh with and express genuine sorrow with his callers from all walks of life who shared their stories with him on a daily basis."

  • He has left an indelible mark, says Holness

Opposition Leader Andrew Holness, in a release issued yesterday, said the late Wilmot 'Motty' Perkins was "an iconic figure whose work and words as a journalist and talk-show host penetrated across the length and breadth of Jamaica, giving hope to the many who listened to him. He was inspiring as he was provocative. He championed the cause of the poor, the vulnerable and victims of injustice. He could never be ignored."

Holness said Perkins' grasp and depth of varying subject matters placed him in a league by himself.

"His capacity to take on any caller, his overpowering laughter and sense of humour will leave an indelible mark in our minds."

  • Seaga saddened by Perkins' death

Former Prime Minister Edward Seaga has expressed sorrow and regret at the passing of veteran journalist and talk-show host Wilmot Perkins.

Seaga, in a statement, referred to Perkins as "a man of absolute integrity and honesty" who had as much a passion for news as for the elevation of his country and its people.

"His integrity, tenacity and courage were an inspiration not only to journalists but all Jamaicans, and his depth of knowledge, his experience and his understanding of our politics, as well as his good humour, will be greatly missed by the entire society," Seaga stated.

"He fearlessly pursued truth and the causes which he believed in, and he advocated his beliefs with commitment and brilliance."
