Alternative to no user-fee policy coming

Health minister Dr Fenton Ferguson said that within six months, the Government should be in a position to put forward an alternative to the current no-user-fee policy across Jamaica's public health-care sector.

He said this yesterday during a tour of the Food For The Poor headquarters in Spanish Town, St Catherine.

Stating that the Government was unapologetic about the ongoing review of the controversial system that was introduced under the Jamaica Labour Party government, Ferguson said that he was still open to ideas for a workable solution.

"Any government anywhere in the world would want to offer free health care, but it is a challenge ... if we want to have equity in the system, then those who can afford to pay ought to, and the Government is pursuing that," he stated.

Ferguson reiterated that despite the proposed change, no one would be denied access to health care.
