Tax duplicity

THE EDITOR, Sir:

'Land tax gold mine' is an inappropriate or unsuitable headline for the story published in The Gleaner of Monday, May 14.

It is simply not true.

I think it is only fair to inform the public that in the United States, the tax policy or system is that property taxes provide the funds to pay for public schooling.

To compare the property tax rates in the two countries is like comparing apples to oranges, or just throwing out a red herring. It has nothing to do with the earning levels in the two countries.

If it is being suggested subtly that the US system be adopted for funding public education in Jamaica, I am sure the Government would welcome the direct taxation approach, but it would mean dismantling our present system of taxation.
