Hewitt promotion sent wrong signal

THE EDITOR, Sir:

In response to the writer of a letter to the editor titled 'JFJ: passion above reason', published in The Gleaner of May 16, I wish to state the following:

At no time did JFJ or myself "[seek] an injunction to prevent the acting appointment of Senior Superintendent of Police Delroy Hewitt as assistant commissioner of police".

It having been reported that SSP Hewitt had recently been appointed as acting assistant commissioner of police, I was approached by a reporter to comment. I merely pointed out that, if the report was true, given that there is a judicial review ongoing in the courts challenging the decision of the Police Service Commission to elevate Mr Hewitt to the rank of senior superintendent, it would appear disrespectful of the court's pending ruling to be further promoting Mr Hewitt.
