THE EDITOR, Sir:
I have been a loyal customer (account number: 578200-574193) of the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) for many years, but over the last four years I have been receiving exorbitant electricity bills. Despite complaints, the bills keep growing.
My husband and I are the only members of the household, and because we are both pensioners, we are finding it increasingly difficult to pay these exorbitant bills from our meagre pension.
To ascertain whether we were being overcharged, my husband and I have conducted a survey in the neighbourhood and found that our electricity bills are the highest in a quarter-mile radius. In fact, many of these households are much larger than ours.
Something must be wrong
I suppose by now JPS would realise that something must be wrong with my metering system. On many occasions I have requested that a check be done to conclude whether the meter is faulty, resulting in the high electricity bills.
In an effort to reduce the use of electricity, I have disconnected all the electrical appliances, except the refrigerator, but to no avail. The more I try to conserve, the higher the bills climb. If this continues, I will certainly have to disconnect the power supply from the premises and revert to using kerosene lamps and deprive myself of the use of a refrigerator.
I am hereby making a formal complaint and expect that the problem be addressed speedily and also that I be compensated for the overbilling over the period.
