Alleged gunman killed, cop shot and injured

A police constable remains in serious condition in hospital following a shooting incident on a passenger bus in the Corporate Area on Friday night.

An unidentified man, who the police say attempted to rob passengers on the bus before opening fire on the cop, was fatally shot in the incident.

According to reports, the policeman, whose name is being withheld, was among passengers on the bus which was going from St Catherine to downtown Kingston.

Police sources say the cop was returning to Kingston, after visiting his months-old daughter in a St Catherine community.

It is further reported that the bus was proceeding along Spanish Town Road, in the vicinity of Majesty Gardens, when a man pulled a firearm and started to rob passengers.

The gunman is said to have recognised one of the passengers as a cop and pointed his gun at him.

The policeman pulled his gun and there was an exchange of fire.

With passengers screaming and taking cover, when the fire fight was done, it was discovered that both men had been hit.

The policeman reportedly suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries to his face and shoulder while the other man was pronounced dead at hospital.
