Should the Government build more pools to encourage swimming among Jamaican youths?

Published: Wednesday | August 1, 2012 Comments 0

I learned to swim at an early age at primary school in the 1970s, before I saw a beach or the sea! Back then, there was a nationwide government campaign, 'learn to swim', which encouraged children to learn what would be an important life skill.

Yes, they should. Can't count how many times I want to go swimming but can't.

- BoSs LaDii

Yes, of course. It's vital, considering our country is surrounded by water and beautiful beaches. Both my daughters learn to swim through their after-school programme. Parents and guardians, I encourage you to learn along with the kids!

- Angie Dixon

Yes, Jamaica needs to encourage all youths. We had one swimmer in the Olympics and we can do better.

- Blu Orchid

I think if Jamaican youths had more opportunities, they would excel in so many areas.

- Shamma Dee

We need more sponsors, so they can train and enter into more international swim meets.

- Ommar Myers

Absolutely, yes! What is lacking in Jamaica are recreational centres for young people. I support it 100%.

- Kicia Abdur

No! The money that they would use to fund the building of pools should be used to fund, in my opinion, more important things, like schools. Jamaica is an island, with numerous lakes and rivers, and is surrounded by the ocean. You can teach/learn swimming for FREE there.
