As an independent nation, one of the things that we have to celebrate as Jamaicans is our unique sense of style. With today being Independence Day, the Flair Magazine decided to pay homage to the '60s and '70s-inspired fashions that have made their way back onto the mainstream fashion scene. However, we have fused the styles of the '60s and '70s with a few contemporary pieces to create that balance to show that old school-inspired fashion can be just as trendy and fashionable as the next avant-garde design.
Styles of the '60s and '70s were more eclectic. Our Jamaican culture is deeply rooted in a plethora of activities, with beauty pageants being one of them. After having monumental successes at the Miss World pageant, taking home the crown three times and with countless places in the top 10 and top five, it's a no-brainer that we should use past queens to don the outfits. After all, they have contributed significantly to Jamaica's cultural heritage both here and abroad.
The Port Royal Naval Hospital, has such historic value that it was the perfect backdrop. Its rustic surroundings was a great contrast to showcase these beauties in the colourful and eccentric designs of Ashley Martin, Andre Shirley and Kerry Christian.
