Jamaicans eye 200m, 400m hurdles glory today
LONDON, England:
After a comparatively quiet day yesterday, Jamaicans will be hoping to add another three medals to the tally on today's sixth day of athletics competition at the Olympic Games here in London, England.
Four medals have already been accounted for, but that figure could rise with defending Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown and back-to-back 100m gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce booked to contest the 200m final, while Kaliese Spencer is ready to impress in her first Olympics 400m hurdles final.
Campbell-Brown can become the first woman in Olympic history to win three straight 200m titles and, although the experienced campaigner has played down the historic sub-plot, she will be motivated to show that she is still the best 200m athlete in the world, after crushing defeats at the Jamaica Olympic Trials weeks ago.
Campbell-Brown showed determination and pride in the semi-finals yesterday, powering past Carmelita Jeter to win in 22.32.
Fraser-Pryce, a 100m specialist, has nothing to lose and as a result, is an even more dangerous factor in this event.
Her coach, Stephen Francis, thinks she is much faster than her 22.10 personal best and is expecting her to post a time in the 21.50 region before too long. Jamaicans will be hoping that she will go close to that time tonight and get herself in the medal running.
Fraser-Pryce, 22.34, ran a comfortable semi-final, easing up while Sanya Richards accelerated to win in 22.30.
The athlete to beat, however, is world leader Allyson Felix, who has been nothing short of spectacular so far.
Spencer, after two fourth-place finishes at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in the 400m hurdles, will be looking to make her first Olympic Games an even more memorable one for her, with a podium finish.
