THE EDITOR, Sir:
The Government of Jamaica needs to wake up and smell the coffee, where growing the economy is concerned.
Jamaica is blessed with some of the best economists and most successful businessmen and businesswomen in the world, yet, our economy continues to lag behind the rest of the world's.
Why? What is lacking from the Jamaican economic model or machinery that causes our economy to, consistently, have negative growth? Or, when it does grow, to do so at a much lower rate and pace than most developing countries of the world? This is, perhaps, the most critical question which needs to be asked and answered, after 50 years of Independence.

Jamaican-Chinese-run businesses grow by leaps and bounds each year, yet our economy continues to lag behind.
Perhaps the prime minister should invite the nation's leading Chinese businessmen and businesswomen to spend a day with key members of her Cabinet at Vale Royal or the Jamaica Conference Centre, to get their suggestions about how best to grow the Jamaican economy by at least seven per cent to begin with. This is the average rate at which the economies of other developing nations of the world are growing annually. Why, in God's name, can't we?!
