Young Windies hit back after quarter-final debacle

TOWNSVILLE, Australia (CMC):

West Indies Under-19s compensated for their heartbreaking quarter-final loss by getting past Pakistan Under-19s by 16 runs in their fifth-place playoff in the ICC Youth World Cup here yesterday.

Sent in at Endeavour Park, West Indies were dismissed for a paltry 182 off 49 overs with captain Kraigg Brathwaite top-scoring with 39 and wicketkeeper Steven Katwaroo chipping in with 35.

Left-arm seamer Mir Hamza was the leading bowler with three for 44.

Pakistan were off to a shaky start and never recovered, falling for 166 off 48.3 overs, with left-arm slow bowler Derone Davis finishing with three for 20.

West Indies, who played the preliminary round unbeaten, will now face England in another playoff contest today.

Seeking redemption after their last-over slump against New Zealand on Monday, West Indies failed to find their footing and slumped to 72 for five in the 21st over.

Attacking opener Sunil Ambris was dismissed for one in the second over the innings with John Campbell getting 13 from 16 balls before becoming Hamza's second wicket at 24 for two.

With three runs added, Hamza prised out Anthony Alleyne without scoring in his next over and Akeal Hosein (11) was removed by leg-spinner Usman Qadir (2-22), to leave the Young Windies tottering on 50 for four in the 15th over.

A sequence of small partnerships, anchored primarily by Brathwaite, then pulled the Caribbean side out of trouble.

Fast bowler Mindley then returned to rock Pakistan early, trapping Sami Aslam lbw for two with the score on nine in the eighth over.

Jones had number three batsman Imam-ul-Haq caught at the wicket for two at 20 for two in the 11th over, but Babar Azam (38) and Umar Waheed (31) propped up the innings with a 51-run third wicket stand.

Once the partnership was broken, Pakistan imploded with only Mohammad Nawaz resisting with 28 off 40 balls.
