Discovering Ron Zacapa 23

What Aston Martin is to cars and Hublot is to watches - Ron Zacapa is to rum! A select few were introduced to this premium Guatemalan rum, made from sugar cane, virgin honey and aged 'above the clouds' in the Guatemalan highlands, last Wednesday at Bin 26 wine bar at the historic Devon House.

The inviting ambience at Bin 26 and a gathering of rum connoisseurs and newbies alike were the perfect complement to the superior taste experience that unfolded.

Ron Zacapa is uniquely aged through a process known as 'sistema solera'. The rum is allowed to mature in a series of casks that previously stored robust bourbons, delicate sherries and fine Pedro Ximenes wines. The rum also rests in once re-charred white oak barrels, to impart additional character from the wood. All this is done 2,300 metres above sea level where the air is cooler and evaporation is reduced - meaning more of the precious rum is retained and allowed to age in the barrels.

This superior process results in a luxurious rum of exceptional quality.

"Every time you taste the rum, you'll have a different experience and this is due to the ageing process," noted Red Stripe brand ambassador Teika Samuda.

Samuda took patrons on an aural journey at Bin 26 as she extolled the distinctiveness of the rum in-between sips of the fine liquid. By the end of the night, patrons not only discovered Ron Zacapa, but fell in love with it.

The taste session provided the perfect opportunity for Red Stripe to showcase why Ron Zacapa won five consecutive gold medals between 1998 and 2002 at the International Rum Festival. This led to Zacapa 23 being inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2003.

Ron Zacapa's attention to detail extends beyond the fine liquid. Each bottle of Ron Zacapa 23 is wrapped with a petate band - a royal Mayan symbol of the unity of time and space. The band is individually weaved for each bottle by a group of women who are direct Mayans descendants.

Ron Zacapa is distributed by Red Stripe and was launched in Jamaica in 2009. There is also the ultra premium Ron Zacapa XO which is the deluxe version of Ron Zacapa 23.
