Phone call taxes have gone too far

Published: Monday | September 3, 2012 Comments 0

THE EDITOR, Sir:

As if we were not already paying enough in taxes on phone bills, I watched as the Government has gradually increased taxes on phone calls.

I received my mobile bill of $14,200, only to find out that $3,600 of that was going strictly to paying taxes. It was a painful realisation.

It seems that we have become helpless as a people and may even get to the point where our backs bend under the burden of taxes. The freedoms we celebrate, even in this our 50th year, come at an extremely high cost. The only difference between this and slavery is that, at least back then, we were producing something.

While this provides a medium for me to vent, it is the burden of the system of taxation all round that makes me feel extorted by the powers that be.
