SANTO DOMINGO, (AP):

A spokesman for a beach resort in the Dominican Republic says a gas tank explosion has injured 16 kitchen workers.

Grand Paradise Bavaro spokesman Luis Lopez says five workers were hospitalised as a result of the blast. Lopez says hotel technicians are trying to determine the cause of the explosion, which occurred Sunday while the workers were getting ready to serve dinner. There was no fire but the explosion left the kitchen in ruins.

Lopez disclosed yesterday that the restaurant served by that kitchen was closed at the time and no tourists were injured in the explosion.

The Grand Paradise Bavaro is on the eastern tip of the Caribbean country, part of the popular Punta Cana area.

The 1,029-room hotel is owned by Toronto, Canada-based Blue Diamond Hotels & Resorts.
