FRANKLIN, Kentucky (CMC):
Jamaican Shaun Bridgmohan produced a scorching ride to pilot 3-1 favourite Miz Ida to the capture of the US$75,000 Kentucky Cup Ladies Turf Stakes on the opening day of the new season at Kentucky Downs here Saturday.
Sitting at the rear of the 11-horse field for most of the mile trip, Bridgmohan brought the three-year-old bay filly from way off the pace to blow by the leaders in the last 70 yards and win by 3-3/4 lengths.
"She's such an honest filly," said Bridgmohan.
"She just likes to run. She dropped back early and saved her kick for the end. She had a lot left."
Miz Ida clocked one minute, 50.46 seconds to win for the fifth time in seven outings on turf.
Brilliant Future, with the outstanding Calvin Borel aboard, set the early pace with lazy fractions through the half-mile.
Sea Level Drive tracked from second with the field paying close attention down the backstretch.
Brilliant Future led into the stretch but was overtaken by Ridgester, before Bridgmohan brought Miz Ida wide on the outside to close quickly and take victory.
