THE EDITOR, Sir:
a. These parishes are Saints, no SINs therein: Saint Andrew, Saint Ann, Saint Catherine - ('th' - no 'trees'), Saint Elizabeth, Saint James, Saint Mary, Saint Thomas.
b. Emphasise the first syllable: CLA-rendon; HAN-over; MAN-chester; WEST-moreland.
c. These are abused:
Montego - should really be pronounced 'MON-TAY-GO' - from the Spanish, but certainly not 'Montiggo', as often heard.
Ocho Rios - Rios as in Puerto Rico.
d. Pronunciation makes a big difference.
Condolence - accent on the first syllable.
Education - say 'edu', not 'edi'.
Evening - the word has no 'l', hence eve-NING.
Fate - your horoscope, perhaps; faiTH (in God, hopefully).
Funeral - has no 'FINs' - pronounce FEW-neral.
Stella Maris - MAris, not Morris (means 'Star of the Sea').
Three - THree, a number; tree, a plant.
Television and vision - no 'john' in either.
