A big business internationally, hair extensions are available to suit every taste and style. They come in a variety of lengths, styles, colours and textures and, therefore, have every woman crowned.

The wrong choice of extensions though, spells disaster, resulting in quite hideous looks.

Fact is, hair extensions plus application and styling can be an expensive undertaking, so some women opt to cut costs and do it themselves or have non-professionals do the job.

Below are common mistakes that should be avoided when purchasing extensions and when deciding on a specific style.

Choosing the wrong style

Do your research, and, if you can, get expert opinion. Not because a style looks great on your sister, friend, cousin or that celebrity does it mean that you will rock it just as well. Factors such as the shape of your face and other features can make a nice style bad for you.

Choosing the wrong hair texture

You should never decide to, for example, add a relaxed (straight hair) ponytail to your unprocessed hair. Conflicting textures do not work. In fact, it just simply makes it obvious that you are wearing fake hair.

Choosing the wrong hair colour

Ensure that you choose a matching hair colour or one that is closest; no one should know where your natural hair stops and the extension begins. Everything should blend in perfectly.

Extensions are notfor every length

Remember that your hair should be long enough to cover the tracks. If you are sporting a short boy cut and feel the urge to go longer, go for a wig or a style where none of your hair is left out.
