THIS DAY IN 1962

JAMAICA'S HISTORICAL landscape is littered with dates which have shaped the terrain as well as the future of the country's diverse inhabitants.

These events range from catastrophic to euphoric with no shortage of recollection whenever the various milestones are mentioned.

From earthquakes, hurricanes and fires to Olympic glory and Independence, The Gleaner started chronicling Jamaica's roller-coaster history ride in 1834, and has had a front-row seat at every major event since.

With 2012 marking Jamaica's 50th year of Independence from Great Britain, The Gleaner continues to share events which made the news, this day, in 1962.

Fair Labour Practices Code for Ja ready

A comprehensive document, setting out proposals by the Ministry of Labour for the enactment of a Fair Labour Practices Code for Jamaica, was presented to representatives of the employers' organisations and the trade unions by the minister of labour, Lynden Newland, yesterday.

The document, which touched on every phase of the island's industrial-relations picture, was tabled at the first meeting of the committee set up by the minister to study the basis on which a Fair Labour Practices Code for Jamaica can be established.

Citrus men order all-out fight against unions' wage bid

Citrus growers attached to the Bog Walk Area Council of the Citrus Growers' Association (CGA) want their directors to "resist, without reserve" any further claims for increased wages, which might be made by trade unions on behalf of workers employed at the association's two factories.

That was the substance of a resolution passed by acclaim at the annual general meeting of the Bog Walk Area Council on Monday. It came after Colin Russell, managing director of the CGA, disclosed that wage claims for a 12.5 per cent increase have been made by trade unions on the association in respect of the 1962-1963 citrus-crop operations.

Sir Kenneth visits St Mary today

His Excellency the Governor General Sir Kenneth Blackburne, accompanied by Lady Blackburne, will be making an official visit to the parish of St Mary today.

His Excellency will visit St Mary High School, the Orange River experimental station, and the cocoa fermentary, and lunch will be with C.A. Touzalin, custos of St Mary, at his home in Highgate.

After lunch, the governor general will visit Robin's Bay on the new coast road.

Thousands welcome Bustamante home

Thousands of cheering Jamaicans last night welcomed Prime Minister Sir Alexander Bustamante, back home from his historic trip to London, where he attended the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' conference.

Sharing in the thunderous acclaim were Lady Bustamante, who he wed a few hours before his departure for London on September 7; the Honourable Robert Lightbourne, minister of trade and industry; and the Honourable John Gyles, minister of agriculture and lands.

Sir Alexander had little to say when greeted by his colleagues. He told the press: "All I have to say is that I am happy to be home again."
