THE EDITOR, Sir:
Some good soul music being played, candles lit, waiting for your wife to get home. One doesn't create such an ambiance and play calypso or punk rock! The right mix of good love songs or R&B to set the mood is absolutely critical. These songs elicit emotions and feelings to rise in you that you probably never knew were there or were dormant until these songs started playing. They bring about these feelings like no other genre of music could do.
Then there are the songs that are of a spiritual nature - some Yolanda Adams songs and some worship and praise songs by Craig and Deans such as You Are God Alone. When Christians listen to these, they are transported to a realm of worship and are compelled to cry out to God. They are ushered into the presence of the Most High and become enthralled in their love adoration of their Creator as they sing.
In the same way a Christian listens to You Are God Alone and gets in the mood, atmosphere and attitude of worship as he sings along, and a lover is taken into a different frame of mind when he or she listens to Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing, I postulate that it's the same way a song about demons and killing puts persons in a different mood and frame of mind. When one has a steady diet of songs that degrade women and refer to them as sex objects, then eventually one is numb and will or be more likely to rape. When all one listens to tells him to shoot people in the head as well as other demonic things, what do you expect the result to be?
I am not laying blame for all the ills of our society on our musicians and DJs, but if you agreed with the first part of my reasoning, then the latter will also follow through. We need to be careful what we put out as music and what we listen to and allow our kids to listen to.
We must be more responsible, everyone of us, if we want to see a reverse in the murders and crime rate in our country. It's not just about policing, but we all have a part to play. I am even wondering how the broadcast commission banned all 'daggering' songs but allows the demon songs to proliferate our airwaves? How comes?
