Former champions Kingston College (KC) registered a hard-fought 1-0 victory over St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) in their Group G clash to seal their place in the quarter-finals of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup football game at Clovelly Park, KC's North Street campus, yesterday.
Tevon Campbell netted the lone goal for the Donavon 'DV' Hayles-coached KC in the 60th minute.
In the group's other game, Ardenne blanked Meadowbrook 2-0.
Victory moved KC - who have a game in hand - to 19 points and second place. Charlie Smith lead the group with 22 points. They are followed by STATHS, who remained third on 14 points.
At Clovelly Park, KC dominated the first half but were kept at bay by a very organised STATHS defensive unit and good goalkeeping from Cristo Campbell.
Shamala Ashman went close to giving KC the lead in the 10th minute, but his powerful shot from 12 yards was tipped over by Campbell.
A few minutes later, a header from close range by his team-mate, Kyle Smith, went wide of the target.
Allen Morgan looked set to give the homesters the lead on the stroke of half-time, but after receiving a through pass from Ashman inside the18-yard box, his weak shot went wide of the target.
KC were finally rewarded for their dominance 15 minutes into the second period when Campbell's looping long-range effort sailed over the head of the goalkeeper and lodged into the net.
Despite winning, Hayles was not happy with his team's performance.
"I was not pleased at all," said Hayles. "I didn't think we played a fluent enough game because we have played much better than this before and I believe that this is one of our worse games this season."
Hayles added: "However, I am happy for the three points because it will boost their confidence a bit more and it also puts us through to the next round of the competition."
Donald Stewart, coach of STATHS, said: "I think that my team didn't do enough to earn a point today because we were slow sometimes in organising ourselves at both ends of the field."
