THE EDITOR, Sir:
I grew up knowing that the United States of America was the land of milk and honey, and I yearned relentlessly to get there. However, it appears that its economic base was weakened by the recent recession.
According to a recent release from the US Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS), there are 12.1 million people who are currently unemployed - of whom 4.8 million have been out of a job for 27 weeks or more.
This is frightening, and if this trend continues, the United States could lose its status as one of the 10 wealthiest nations in the world.
This would not be good, and I hope that the people elect a president who demonstrates the strongest leadership in rebuilding its economic strength.
