Stock market gets post-storm bump

Stock market activity was muted on Thursday, but recorded a post-storm bump on trading of nine stocks across the combined markets.

The advancing stocks were for companies operating in the cigarette, securities dealing and banking markets - Carreras, Mayberry Investment, JMMB and Scotia Group Jamaica.

The losers were food/financial services conglomerate GraceKennedy, property conglomerate Pan-Jamaica, and life insurance giant Sagicor Life Jamaica.

The JMMB 87.5 per cent preference stock and lottery company Supreme Ventures traded firm.

The combined market gained 197 points or 0.22 per cent to close at 90,322.31. There was no trading on Wednesday when Hurricane Sandy passed through.

Thursday's trading of 339,623 units was valued at J$8.17 million.
