Grennell's Road Safety 5K seeks more support

Alphonso Grennell, managing director of Grennell's Driving School, is bemoaning the lack of support for his 5K event, scheduled for November 17, in which individuals are invited to "run, walk or roll for the cause".
"There is a challenge, but we're trying to push for it. We are not getting the sort of support we need. We need more people support. I have had to be spending money out of my own pocket. If you can't donate, just come out, register and walk," he said.
Walking for survivors
Grennell said the focus of the event is not entirely on those who have been killed, but rather those who have been left behind. He pointed to those who have survived motor-vehicle accidents and are paralysed or wheelchair-bound, as well as the families of individuals who have died.
Despite the challenges, Grennell is resolute about making the fund-raising run a reality. He hopes to raise at least $1 million, with the funds going to the Percy Junor Hospital and the Jamaica Fire Brigade, the latter requiring 'jaws of life' equipment to extricate persons trapped in crashed vehicles. In the future, Grennell also has plans for the Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre, formerly the Mona Rehabilitation Centre, to be the run's beneficiary.
Participants are being encouraged to wear yellow T-shirts as a sign of hope for those who have been affected by motor-vehicle accidents. T-shirts are also being sold at a cost of $500.
On Saturday when the event begins at 6:30 a.m., participants will assemble next door to Grennell's Driving School and, making a left, go on to Garden Boulevard. At the intersection with Old Hope Road, they will go left, then take another left at Munroe Road in Liguanea. At the end of Munroe Road, there is another left on to Wellington Drive, then a right at the intersection with Mona Road for the final part of the course back to Grennell's Driving School.
Registration will be open until the morning of the 5K and participants are encouraged to donate a minimum of $500 for adults and $200 for children who take part in the event.
