Lovers' rock singer Romain Virgo recently completed a three-month tour to support his second album, The System, which was released in May by VP Records.
The tour, which took him to the United States, Europe and Japan, was a satisfying experience for the 22-year-old vocalist, who is best known for songs like Can't Sleep and Brown Skin.
While he enjoyed the United States (US) and European legs of the jaunt, Virgo said his time in Japan was special and well spent.
"It was nice to see the love of the fans in Japan. It was all sold-out venues. But I'm very happy my dream of getting to tour with Beres Hammond and Tarrus Riley in the UK came true," he said.
In Japan, Virgo did some dates with the Mighty Crown, the leading sound system in that country. He was pleasantly surprised at how tuned in the Japanese are to dancehall music and Jamaican culture, more broadly.
"It just amazed me to see how Japanese can talk Jamaican language better than I can," he said, laughing.
Virgo kicked off the System tour on June 23 with an appearance at the Sierra Nevada Music Festival in northern California. This was followed by other gigs in Oregon and Washington state.
He closed the US tour with a performance on the Reggae on the River show, another popular event on the California festival circuit.
He said crowd reaction varied in each region he played.
"In the UK, they really love the songs from the first album, including Can't Sleep, Rain is Falling, Taking You Home and Love Doctor. They are also catching on to the songs from the new album, like Rich In Love, Don't You Remember and System. "In Japan, they know almost all of the songs from the first album, including the ones I mentioned earlier," he said.
"In Europe, I can't think of any of my songs that they don't know."
Another eye-opener for Virgo was the number of his songs he rarely hears or performs at home that are actually very popular overseas. They include Wah Dis Pon Me, Should I Call Her, Mussi Mad and No Money.
There is no slowing down for the reggae crooner who completed his European tour in Berlin, Germany, last week.
The last leg of tours took the artiste across Europe to countries including Switzerland, Italy and Belgium.
