No flat tax for transporters

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Transport operators associated with several public transport organisations on Thursday, December 13, condemned plans by Tax Administration Jamaica to introduce a flat tax for public transport operators.

The various groups, which met under the invitation of the Jamaica Association of Transport Operators and the Jamaica Transport Operators Management Services (JTOMS), said the recommendation by Government to introduce a flat tax cannot and will not work.

It is difficult to pay taxes on income you do not earn, and a different way will have to be found to finance the national Budget. This new thrust by the administration will be fought to the death.

This comes against the background of a mass meeting of ALL transport operators being planned for next Thursday, December 20, where a plan of action will be laid out.

The more than 40 senior transport operators are serving notice that the roads will be void of any public transportation if the Government does not seek dialogue.
