The 2012 horse-racing season comes to a close at Caymanas Park today with the $1 million Sweet Ruckus Trophy over 1400 metres for native and imported two-year-olds headlining the card.
With the unbeaten American filly CITY FLIGHT having little to beat in the feature, the focus will be on the owners' championship, which should go down to the wire.
The top contenders for the title are two-time defending champions Elite Bloodstock Limited and new kid on the block Michros (Michael Bernard), who led the standings for a long way before he was overtaken by Elite Bloodstock on Boxing Day, thanks to MARK MY WORD's facile victory in the Harry Jackson Memorial Cup grade one supporting feature.
Going into today's meet, Elite Bloodstock lead the standings with $14,272.450 - just under $800,000 clear of Michros in second on $13,432.650.
However, Elite Bloodstock have no runners on the card, while Michros will send out a string of horses, including 'racing certainty' CITY FLIGHT in the Sweet Ruckus feature.
Barring an act of God, Michros is almost sure to secure the winners' share of the purse - $560,000 - with the Gary Subratie-trained CITY FLIGHT.
In addition to CITY FLIGHT, Michros has a number of runners now dropped low down in claiming company to put him over the top.
They include the American three-year-old maiden filly ALPHALETTA, now running on a $180,000 claiming tag in the third race; MAKIN BOP in the second, BLACKIE DAVIS dropped from claiming $450,000 to $180,000 in the fourth, as well as LINDA RICE in the sixth and MY GIRL NALA in the ninth.
Michros clearly holds an advantage and, if things go as planned, should be able to surpass Elite Bloodstock with so many runners at his disposal.
CITY FLIGHT TO TAKE ALL
CITY FLIGHT, having impressed with two fast-time wins, should turn the race into a procession leaving the half-mile, as none of her opponents has the credentials to stop her from completing the hat-trick.
CITY FLIGHT is coming off of an impressive victory over FORTUNEONEHUNDRED in the December 5 Dye Job Sprint Trophy over 1200 metres, covering the distance in the smart time of 1:12.1 on a canter.
The dark bay filly will be racing the clock from a long way out and should lead home stable-companions OLYMPIC PROSPECT and LITTLE MAMA MIA.
Other firm fancies on the card are MINISTEROFJUSTICE in the second race, ALPHALETTA in the 3rd, SILVER CAT to stave off FULL FORCE in the 6th, QUICK MARCH in the 8th and MIRACLE STAR ahead of ETHOS and MENTALIST in the closing Track Price Plus Dig Out Handicap.
