In August 2008, Michele English was appointed president and chief operating officer of Columbus Communications Jamaica Limited, operators of the Flow and Columbus Business Solutions brands in Jamaica. This followed two years as general manager - the appointment that first brought her to Jamaica in 2006. This has seen her playing an integral role in managing Columbus' aggressive over US$350-million capital investment program to roll out Jamaica's first all-island broadband network; a program that has virtually transformed the telecommunications industry in Jamaica.
The opportunity to take on the challenge of building something from scratch was part of the appeal for the industrious English and was largely instrumental in her decision to come to Jamaica, which she has now made her home.
She is proud of what the team at Columbus has achieved, of having the opportunity to build a company staffed by a professional team of Jamaicans that delivers First-World services to its customers. The impact of Flow's broadband technology on education is an area of continued focus for her and her team, with the company's Building Leaders Through Technology program providing free high-speed internet to power learning in over 140 schools across the island. The importance of this effort is driven by the belief that it is by having an educated, technology-intelligent population that sustainable development can be achieved.
Today, Outlook Magazine shares 10 Things We Did Not Know about Flow's president and COO - the very charming Michele English.
1 She is a very competitive person who can't resist a challenge. She ran in the recent Reggae Marathon, finishing 9th in her age-group category and proudly crossed the finish line before her husband, Doug.
2 She was a competitive figure skater as a teenager.
3 She is a lover of animals with a preference for dogs and cats. The pets that are part of her family are 2 dogs and 2 cats
4 She enjoys cooking and despite a busy work schedule, many days of the week she makes the time to go home from work to cook dinner for her family
5 An avid reader, her favourite genre is historical fiction. While she welcomes the convenience of an e-reader, especially when travelling, her preference is for the feel of a real book.
6 Enjoys travelling and being able to experience the culture of the places she visits. A most memorable travelling experience was a trip to the Mediterranean with visits to Egypt, Greece, Turkey and Israel.
7 She loves to sing and dance, but her family reminds her that she really does not do either well. She admits that if you see her driving, it is likely that you will catch her belting out a tune in full voice within the privacy of her car. She put her dancing skills on display when she played the role of a Jamaican dancehall queen at a recent Flow employee event, to the rousing cheers of appreciation from her team.
8 Will cry unabashedly over a "sappy" movie. She said watching The Descendants on Flow OnDemand is one that recently brought her to tears.
9 She suffers from acrophobia, as she is terribly afraid of heights, but ...
10. ... enjoys the thrill of riding roller coasters. Some memorable ones are The Incredible Hulk at Islands of Adventure and The Manta at Sea World - both in Orlando.
