An additional 13 events will be contested on the opening day of this year's staging of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Grace-Kennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships which will be held from Tuesday, March 12 to Saturday, March 16 at the National Stadium.
On last year's opening day, only one event was contested, the preliminary round of the boys' 2000 metres Steeplechase.
For the first time at Champs, there will be three rounds for athletes contesting the sprint hurdles. The preliminary round will take place on Tuesday's opening day with the girl's 70m hurdles being the first track event at 2:45 p.m, with the Class One boys' 110m event being the penultimate event of the day at 5:35 p.m, just before the steeplechase, which will close off the day's proceeding at 6:10 p.m.
There will also be the Classes One and Two boys' long Jump, javelin Open for boys, Class One girls discus and Class Two girls shot put, a new event at Champs this year.
The second round of the sprint hurdles, the semi-finals, will be run on Friday, starting at 8:45 a.m. The Class Two girl's 100m hurdles will be run first, while the Class Three girls 80m will close off the obstacle events at 10:15 a.m. The finals in these events will be run off on Saturday afternoon, with the 70m hurdles for Class Four girls leading off the finals at 2:55 p.m., with the Class One boys 110m set for 4:10 p.m.
The boys and girls' Open 400 metres hurdles will also begin earlier, as the preliminary rounds will take place on Wednesday's second day, with the girls down to take the track first at 5:45 p.m, while the boys will compete at 6 p.m. The finals will be contested on Friday's fourth day, with the girls running at 7:10 p.m and the boys 10 minutes later at 7:20 p.m.
Last year, five finals were contested on Wednesday's second day, but this time there will be six. In addition to the boys Class One long jump, there will also be the Class Two boys long jump final. The latter will be the first final for boys, at 4:10 p.m., while the Class One event is set to start at 5:55 p.m.
Other field-events finals on the day will be the girls Class One discus and the new event, girls Class Two shot put. The triple jump Open for girl's will take place on the Thursday, as opposed to Wednesday last year. The girl's Open 200m steeplechase final will run off at 9:25 p.m., with the boys event being the other track final on the day.
