THE EDITOR, Sir:
I always shake my head when reading Mr Orville Higgins' opinions on sport, but this time he has convinced me that he really is an irrational, ridiculous fool!
I apologise for calling Mr Higgins that, but there was no better word I could find immediately upon responding to his comments.
Now fine, the team which scores wins a football match. No argument there. But to say the team which lost, which may have had 80 per cent possession, more shots at goal, etc., was not better over the 90 minutes is stretching his ridiculous argument too far.
I only have one question for Mr Higgins: If the winning team's goal (in, let's say, a 1-0 victory) happened to be an own goal (and you and I know this has happened numerous times in matches), would you still persist with the argument that 'the better team won'?
