Pray for Jamaica

THE EDITOR, Sir:

On Thursday, during my morning devotion, I was impressed to do something about the state of Jamaica. It occurred to me that too many Jamaicans believe that there is nothing, or very little, we can do to change the paradigm of crime, corruption, uncertainty and chaos that continues to engulf our nation.

Being a believer in God, 2 Chronicles 7:14 came to mind: "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." The scripture reminded me that I might not be able to reach the policymakers of our country, but I knew someone Who could - GOD. I then wrote and shared this prayer with all my contacts:

"O God, we come to You today as Jamaicans who are concerned about the state of our country, and believe that the solutions to our many problems can ONLY be achieved through DIVINE intervention.

We, therefore, commit this country - people of all races and backgrounds; our leaders in government and opposition; our economy and economic agenda, including the IMF talks; our civic leaders; our leaders of institutions; our families; our troubled youths and children; and every aspect of daily living in this great land we call home, to You.

HEAL our land that is plagued with SINS (secret and open), corruption (in high and low places), murders (organised crime, domestic, others), and severe poverty.

Grant to our political and strategic leaders the moral, ethical, and spiritual compass they need to lead and achieve success for ALL Jamaicans. Protect our children and the vulnerable from evil and wickedness. Comfort those who mourn.

Give each reader of this prayer the faith required to believe that, because we took the time to pray, You will answer; but the change will begin in us. Thank You for the answers we will receive as a result of this prayer, in Jesus' name. Amen."
