Dilly-dallying on tax collection

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Some weeks ago, an announcement was made by the Government that a travel stop order would be placed at the island's ports to prevent delinquent taxpayers from leaving the country.

I view this as a complete waste of time and resources, because if the Government knows WHO these delinquent taxpayers are, why not just COLLECT the taxes from them, or have them make suitable arrangements to pay?

It is worthy of note that Mr Gladstone Turner, head of the Special Enforcement Team, which we used to see fairly regularly on TV, has (the last time I heard) been parked behind a desk ever since an operation at Auto Traders Ltd on Old Hope Road.
