The 35th edition of the Milo Western Relays will reintroduce three events to the competition schedule in a bid to help athletes attain the qualifying standard for this year's ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships.
The events to be re-added to the programmes are the women's 100m open race, as well as the sprint hurdles events, which will be run in both boys and girls classes. The hurdles events will include boys' Classes I, II and III, with the girls event being run in Classes I and II.
The decision, according to meet organisers, was arrived at after consultation with various coaches, who have been given less time to see their athletes attain the Champs qualifying standard after an adjustment in the date of this year's events.
one less meet
The coaches will also have one less meet for the athletes to do so, following the cancellation of the County of Cornwall Athletics Association Mannings Field Events and Hurdles meet.
Champs, originally scheduled for mid-March, was brought forward by a week this year after a conflict arose due to the meet's original date being on the same day as a CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier for Jamaica's national men's football team, with both events booked for the National Stadium.
This year's Milo Western Relays will take place on Saturday February 9th at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
According to a release, meet director Ray Harvey said in the best interest of all concerned, in order to ensure that the scheduling for the one-day event is not disjointed, the sprint hurdles will start at noon, one hour before the official start of the meet.
