Facts still unclear in fatal police training exercise

Law-enforcement agents probing last Wednesday night's fatal incident at the Jamaica Police Academy in Twickenham Park, St Catherine, were yesterday still unclear as to what went wrong during the training exercise in which 20-year-old constable Ricardo McKenzie was killed and five others injured.

"The investigations still remain cloudy," said a high-ranking member of the officer corps who spoke with The Gleaner yesterday. "Until all the statements are collected, we can't say anything much," the senior officer said.

At least 20 of the police personnel who escaped the incident unhurt have been given until tomorrow to submit written statements.

McKenzie and the five others were shot after live ammunition mysteriously found its way into the training exercise.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) along with the Bureau of Special Investigations and the Inspectorate of Constabulary are collaborating to establish what transpired during the training exercise.

INDECOM said yesterday that statements have already been collected from nine instructors.
