THE EDITOR, Sir:
Researchers have been studying what they call the Ikea Effect. Ikea is that big Swedish furniture company that sells its products in boxes. Whatever the customer has purchased, he/she has to put together at home.
The study revealed that the most incompetent people love putting their own furniture together, and no matter how poorly they assembled their new articles, they keep coming back to buy more products, take them home, and struggle all over again. They seem blind to their own incompetence.
The researchers see this same Ikea Effect in companies - doing the same incompetent things over and over. They fail to bring in experts to help them and, eventually, the company fails.
I'm no researcher, but I can see this same Ikea Effect in Jamaica's present Government. It spent 18 years in power and was devoid of all qualities required to run a country. Now it is at it again, and is blind to its own inadequate ways.
