The debt is ours: stop pointing finger at others

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I believe the time is right for a gentle reminder that Government is not just the party in power, but includes Her Majesty's loyal Opposition and our independent judiciary, all ably assisted by the executing arm, the civil service.

There is a public disconnect when we speak of responsibility and accountability. We really need to assume our adult role and stop placing blame and pointing the finger at someone else all the time.

The debt is ours. We have all been on a feeding frenzy: bigger, more expensive cars; bigger, more expensive dream homes; shoes of every imaginable colour and style; every party and every fête, and on and on with consumption. Not so, however, when it comes to productivity. That has been declining steadily.

Now that it is pay-up time, we declare over and over that it is Government's fault! And we do not want anything to change. We still want our multiple weeks' vacation with all the other categories of leave, time to watch cricket, etc.

This situation was created by all of us over time. We now have to face up to it and stop blaming everyone but ourselves.
